THOMAS MERRETT

Biography

Thomas Merrett is a British sculptor, draughtsman, and printmaker based in East London. Drawing from both classical influences and his own distinctive vision, Merrett’s work is rooted in an exploration of the human form, anatomy, and movement. His elegant and contemplative figures convey character and emotion, often distilling elements to their essential, almost symbolic forms.

Merrett trained at the City and Guilds of London Art School and further honed his skills at the Florence Academy of Art, where he studied drawing and modelling from life. His creative process typically begins in clay, before transitioning to materials such as marble, stone, or bronze, which allow him to capture the essence of his subjects with precision and fluidity. His works are characterised by a dynamic energy, whether in the bold, defined lines of his bronze sculptures or the fluid movement in his drawings

Merrett’s work frequently portrays small congregations of figures clustered together, engaged in a solemn moment of arcane activity. These figures, while simplified in form, convey a profound sense of narrative and emotion, suggesting moments of contemplation or connection. The arrangement of these figures creates a dynamic interplay between individual subjects and their collective presence, forming a unique language that transcends literal representation.

Since 2017, Merrett has been a member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors and has gained recognition for his commissions, including the bronze sculpture *Flight*, now displayed at Founders Hall. His work is held in numerous collections, including the Museu Europeu d’Art Modern in Barcelona. Merrett's accolades include a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) award in 2014, the International Founders Sculpture Prize in 2016, and being named a finalist for the National Sculpture Prize in 2021.
